Roland System-100 Plug-Out Synthesizer

Roland - System 100 - Plug-Out Synthesizer

Roland have expanded their exciting range of plug-out synthesizers today with the addition of the legendary System-100. Originally released in 1975, the System-100 was a semi-modular mono-synthesizer which was expandable thanks to the additional Model 101 and Model 102 units.

As with all of the AIRA plug-out synthesizers, the System-100 has been developed using Roland’s Analog Circuit Behavior technology resulting in a faithful re-creation of the original hardware and can be used with the System-1 and System-1m synthesizers as well as being run as an independent VST plug-in.

Being a Roland AIRA fan myself I’ve been blown away by all of the plug-out synthesizes that they have released so far, however I would like to see them start to re-create some of their classic 80s and 90s hardware such as the JX3P, Alpha Juno 2 and of course the mighty JP8000.

Roland AIRA System-1 Software Synthesizer

Roland AIRA - System 1 Software Synthesizer

Roland have announced a pretty mind-blowing addition to the AIRA family in the form of a software version of their epic System-1 synthesizer.

Details are currently limited to the promotional image featured above, however if the current crop of AIRA VST products is anything to go by we should be able to expect a faithful reproduction of the System-1 in all it’s mind-bending glory.

As a System-1 owner myself I’ve found that it’s capabilities go way beyond that of the on-line demos and factory presets. It’s best described as a bottomless pit of filth and beauty and in my opinion is the greatest synthesizer since Native Instruments Massive.

Roland AIRA System-1m Modular Synthesizer

Roland-Aira-Modular

After a week of teasing us with shadowy images, Roland have finally unveiled the details of their forthcoming System-1m modular synthesizer.

The System-1m is a Eurorack compatible, semi-modular version of the System-1 with extra features like CV/Gate connections, external input, and more comprehensive signal routing options.

Roland are also gearing up to release a range of standalone, table-top and Eurorack compatible effects for the System-1m for next-level sound mangling and experimentation, with distortion, crusher, delay and scatter coming soon.

Roland System-1 V1.20 Update

System-1

System-1 owners will be very excited to hear that Roland have released a new update to their already powerful synthesizer featuring the addition of sixty four preset banks and six new oscillator waveforms. The new waveforms allow users to create classic EDM sounds made popular by software synthesizers such as Native Instruments Massive which where not previously achievable with the System-1. These include Skrillex style growling bass lines, Knife Party style talking synthesizer leads and dance-floor shredding bass cannons in the style of Flux Pavilion.

Details on the new oscillator waveforms are as follows…

● Noise Saw – A sawtooth wave with movement similar to an analog circuit.
● Logic Operation – A waveform that uses a logic circuit to combine multiple waveforms.
● FM – A frequency-modulated waveform.
● FM + Sync – Syncs a frequency-modulated waveform to the OSC pitch to produce a scale.
● Vowel – A waveform similar to human voice.
● CB – A metallic one-shot sound.

Roland AIRA Modular Synthesizer

aira-modular

Roland AIRA have caused a stir among music tech enthusiasts this week by posting a mysterious image of what appears to be a new modular synthesizer on the home page of their web-site.

Despite the low resolution of the image it clearly shows the silhouette of a modular style synthesizer sporting the classic Roland AIRA lights.

At present there are no details available regarding the mystery product other than the accompanying text which suggests that it will be unveiled at Frankfurt Musikmesse 2015.

Free On-Line TB303 Emulator

UK based multi-media agency Errozero have create a fairly mind-blowing web based emulator of the classic Roland TB303 synthesizer.

The app features two TB303 layers along with most of the controls that can be found on the original machine. It also features a selection of beats from the classic Roland TR909 drum machine enabling you to create your own Acid House anthems straight from your browser.

Errozero certainly have created an interesting alternative to wasting your time at work on FaceBook!

808 The Movie

808TheMovie

This month sees the long awaited release of the much anticipated documentary ‘808 The Movie’.

Alexander Dunn’s documentary on the Roland TR-808 charts the rise and fall of the legendary drum machine whose boom-bastic low end helped give birth to hip-hop and modern EDM. Everyone from Phil Collins to Li’l Jon weighs in on the significance of this clunky “Rhythm Composer” black box, with plenty of party people attesting to how the presence of its electro-funky beats could get folks up out of their seats and make their bodies sway.

Roland Promars Plug-Out VST

Roland-Promars

Roland have just announced the latest addition to their series of plug-out synthesizers in the shape of the Promars Compuphonic.

The Promars synthesizer was originally produced by Roland in the early 1980s and was a predecessor to the classic Roland Jupiter. It’s since become one of the hardest vintage synthesizers to track down on the second hand market.

As with Roland’s previous plug-out instruments, you don’t need to own a System-1 in order to use it since it’s able to run as an independent VST plug-in.

Available March 2015.
